For the first time in 40 years, we have multi-colored lights on our Christmas tree. It’s always been plain white in the past. Is this what a midlife crisis looks like?

Change it back tomorrow morning and we’ll never speak of this night again...

I went the other way. We always had multi colored lights on the (fake, because allergies) tree growing up and on my own little trees. When I got my first really big and nice (but still fake) tree a few years back, I went with all white lights. I dig the classic look.

Shes a beauty! Colored lights and all.
40 years? Really?

I grew up with colored lights, now we all do white.
Isn’t that weird?

I’m a personal fan of white lights with tinsel. And whoever created that angel hair stuff should be forced to walk on Legos all day.

My parents switched from multicolored to white when I was 10, and I’ve never gone back (I’m 41 now).
This year we changed to LED. The lights were purchased at the evil empire’s store. The boxes all said they were warm white, but about half the strands are cool white. I am disenchanted.
Before the lights were purchased, I let my gf know that I’d be okay going back to multicolored if she felt like it... Perhaps the reconciliation that comes later in life extends to Christmas lights as well?

I honestly couldn’t imagine having a Christmas tree without multi-color lights. I didn’t realize other people actually did that - I thought they only used the white lights for exterior or other non-tree decorations.

When I was young, we had the giant C9 bulbs on our tree. I even had a small tree in my room one year that had all red C9s on it. I put the adapter on the plug that made the whole tree flash on and off. It was awesome. When I moved to live with my dad in 76, he always had plain white, and I’ve been plain white ever since. For some reason, I just felt like trying something new this year. I think I prefer the white, but my kids like the color, so maybe we’ll alternate years.

I dig the classic look too. But I finally went with the big C9 bulbs on the house because those icicle lights are a pain in the ass. I guess the big bulbs are classic 60s and 70s.

Back in the early 70s, we used that foil tinsel. Until the cat started eating it. It’s pretty, but man, it’s a mess.

Same here, until this year. Perhaps I’m regressing.

Yup. As a youngster in Oak Park (up until Xmas 75), we used the big C9 bulbs. When I moved to live with my dad in 76, he had the white ones, and I’ve used white ever since. I’m not exactly sure why I felt the urge to switch this year. I’m still a fan of the white ones, though.

I miss colored lights. All four (I may have a problem) of my trees are artificial and pre-lit with white ones. I might need to check after Christmas for some clearanced colored trees.

Despite the fact that formerly-live Christmas trees are getting obscenely expensive, I still get one. I’m stuck in tradition and can’t break free.

I wish I could. I’m always gone for a big chunk of December because everyone wants loan paperwork completed by the end of the year. I’m just happy when I manage to get my decorations up!

Her parents put up a tree for the first time in like eight years, and they used C9s. I think it’s actually a good thing for them, as her mom tends to see how many lights she can weave into the tree, and the C9s take up a decent amount of real estate. It doesn’t seem like it’s quite as eye-searing as normal (her mom does the lights for our tree as well).
